Painting Description

This view showing how the coal canal joined with the Kennet and Avon Canal at Dundas proved to be the most difficult one to paint in Rogers series of seasonal Canal scenes.
After viewing old photographs of Dundas and visiting it on many occasions, Roger was unable to actually see everything together, i.e. the Coal Canal, the Kennet and Avon Canal, The River Avon and the Railway line.
In order to include all of the above in the picture, Roger used his minds’ eye to remove the trees and foliage. Then, with some artistic license, he strategically replaced it so as to include as much detail as possible. If you look closely you can even see a very early steam locomotive just to the right of the keepers cottage.
The Dundas Aqueduct that carries the Kennet and Avon Canal was designed by John Rennie and named after Charles Dundas, MP and chairman of the Kennet and Avon Canal Company.
