SCENES OF THE SOMERSETSHIRE COAL CANAL (1846)
MONKTON COMBE (Summer)
Roger decided to include this view of Monkton Combe as it was where the first Road Bridge over the canal was built.
When the railway came through Monkton Combe the canal was drained and the bridge was removed.
This site became known as Monkton Combe Station and Siding. (This was later re-named ‘Titfield for the film ‘The Titfield Thunderbolt’)
A fully laden horse drawn barge is just disappearing under the bridge. The horse is obviously out of sight on the other side. The farmer, on his horse and cart, is probably on his way to market in Bath.
