Roger opened his studio at Chew Valley in May 2001. Since then he has often wondered what this beautiful valley looked like, prior to the reservoir, when it was known as “Moreton”. After many hours of research into records kindly given to him from Bristol Water and from many local people who were keen to tell him about their memories of “Moreton”. Roger has now produced a set of
four seasonal paintings depicting some of the farms and mills etc. that are sadly long gone. This spring scene of Stratford Mill was an ideal painting to start with as it was probably the only building to be demolished and re-built (at Blase Castle), this enabled him to see what this old mill looked like, albeit he also had to use old maps and his imagination to hopefully give a realistic impression of how the surrounding countryside used to look.
