SCENES OF THE SOMERSETSHIRE COAL CANAL (1846)
TIMSBURY BASIN (Winter)
During his childhood Roger was told many stories by his father and grandfather, who were both local coal miners, about how, many years ago coal was transported from the many local mines
into Bath and beyond by canal. He decided to recall these memories and after much research into the coal mining industry has now produceda set of four seasonal paintings.
This winter sunset scene depicts coal trucks being tracked by way of tramways that linked the pits around timsbury down to the Basin, near Paulton, where the coal was then loaded onto the barges These barges were then horse drawn towards Bath through what was known as the Dunkerton Line and onto where it joined the Kennet and Avon Canal at the Dundas Aqueduct Limpley Stoke.
